I first attempted the project at Burning Man 2015.
Without simple instructions, organization, or any online content available to participants, it was not successful.
I gave the Community Camera Project a second attempt at Desert Hearts Festival in 2016 and I was blown away by the outcome of the gallery we created!
I decided to do it again at the Desert Hearts 2017 and had a great return of cameras again!
I never thought it would be years before I resurrected a dying project, but I guess I got caught up with life. I lost momentum on the project, focusing on my artwork rather than bringing my vision to life.
Fast forward to 2024- while I was working on cleaning and organizing my apartment- I stumbled upon a bag of cameras and my heart filled with joy. The excitement was back and I knew that I was ready to put in the work necessary to make this dream a reality.
When I went to finally develop the disposable cameras, I was crushed to hear from my photo technician that the film has an expiration date, and “there will most likely be nothing that develops on these cameras.”
I was crushed to hear this news, but I had hope that these memories would be recovered so I paid to have them try anyway.
When I picked up the order that I risked hundreds of dollars to revive, I was overcome with joy by what I saw. The 2017 Desert Hearts Gallery was saved! It was time!
I created multiple pages on my website dedicated to the Community Camera Project, with separate galleries
For each event.
I brought the project back with a vengeance!
I brought 30 cameras to Lightning in a Bottle 2024 and created a page for that festival as well.
And now I finally brought the Community Camera Project back to the party where the magic began, @deserthearts Festival presented with @walterproductions at Playa Ponderosa.
I expected a good time, but I wasn’t prepared for how magical the weekend was. My expectations were blown away because I was thinking that nobody could ever throw a party that even close to some earlier DH events. Boy was I wrong!

In September of 2015, I brought 26 disposable cameras with me to Burning Man. I labeled them: "Community Cameras".
The goal of this project was to collect memories that other people experienced. Moments that we all could relate to, but from a different perspective. A glimpse at everything going on outside of a single field of view.
I passed out all 26 cameras and waited patiently to have them returned to my camp, or shipped to me. And I'm still waiting... I got 2 back out of the bunch. What happened? I guess that everyone who took the last photos on the cameras wanted to keep the memories for themselves. Maybe not necessarily out of greed, but to ensure they could reflect on their magical journey later on in life. For my second attempt at this project, I wanted it to be known to all those who participate that your memories WILL be saved forever, but collectively here online, for everyone to enjoy together!
This time around, I managed to get back 6/24 cameras! I think we can do even better this year! I'm blessed to have fallen into a community that has taught me and many others so very much about love and connection and oneness. A community that changes lives for the better, in the name of love. In the name of Music. Art. Creativity. Expression...
Since the 2016 Desert Hearts Festival Community Camera Project was a success, I tried it again for 2017 and gathered another great collection of memories!
